By 1840 the brickworks were in production. In the winter clay was dug out by hand and left in great heaps leaving large pits which filled with water on the land where Brick Kiln Rise now stands. In spring the clay was barrelled into the brick making machine from which it emerged in a continuous length and was cut with wires into bricks and left to dry.
Each week one of the 2 brick kilns were filled with bricks and fired up on a Thursday, reaching full heat on Friday before the fires were allowed to burn out on Saturday. All this was very thirsty work and barrels of beer were frequently brought from The Crown Prince Inn (which changed its’ name to The Prince around the time of WW1) on Upper Green.
