Stanford in the Vale has memorials for both World War I (The Great War) and World War II.
In the First World War of 1914- 1918 approximately 144 men from Stanford in the Vale who served in land, sea and air forces, 19 were killed or died of injuries (of the 15 traced, 9 were buried in France, 3 in Belgium, 1 in Germany, 1 in Stanford; 1 in India, and the name of 1 appears on Chatham Naval Memorial).
In the Second World War (1939-1945), 10 individuals are recorded on the War Memorial in St. Denys’ church as having lost their lives, and these died at sea (commemorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial and Tower Hill Memorial) or are buried in Stanford in the Vale, France, Hungary, Italy, Syria and Tunisia.
The names of those who died all appear on the village’s War Memorial, and to honour those soldiers and to recognise their sacrifices they are also the road names used within the new housing developments at River Meadow.
