So named from the days when the dead from Goosey had to be carried from All Saints’ Church to St Denys for burial. The Pall Bearers would carry the coffin across the fields from Goosey crossing Park Lane and approaching Standford via Penstones Bridge. From there they would pass the Marlborough Arms (now demolished), cross the High Street and approach Church Path and hence St Denys. Large stones were placed on the route for resting the coffin. Given that all these fields flood during the winter months it would have been a difficult, cold, wet walk.
