Cox’s Hall is one of the grander houses in the village but is actually a shadow of its former self. Built in the 17th century by the Cox family it originally had east and west wings as well as the central frontage that you see today. The west wing was demolished around 1900 almost certainly due to a major fire. Within the grounds can be found a very fine brick dovecote with a stone roof with spaces for around a thousand nesting pairs of doves.
In 1752 Joseph Cox and his wife Catherine presented St Denys church with a very fine silver flagon in thanks for their 3 children recovering from smallpox by inoculation some 40 years before Edward Jenner’s development of a smallpox vaccination. The flagon in use until recently is now in safe storage.
